How to Choose Your Wedding Dress Budget

A Realistic Guide to What You Get for Your Money

Choosing Your Wedding Dress Budget

Choosing your wedding dress budget can feel overwhelming. You want to be realistic, but you also don’t to limit yourself too much. Here at Bella Brides, we want every bride to feel prepared and comfortable with their wedding dress budget. In this guide, we will dive into what “realistic” means for a wedding dress budget, what exactly you get with each budget range, and how to find a dress you're obsessed with no matter your budget.

How Much do Wedding Dresses Cost?

Wedding dresses can cost anywhere from $200 on Amazon to $50,000 from premiere couture designers, but in general, the average bride is shopping at bridal shops with dresses ranging from about $500-$5,000. And yes, there is a stark difference between each price point. In this guide, you will find a breakdown of general rules of thumb for each price range.

Under $1500 Wedding Dress Budget

As a general rule, most wedding dresses at bridal shops start at $1500, especially for special ordering. But we get, it! When you first start planning a wedding, it’s totally normal to look at the overall budget and wonder where you can save. The good news is, finding a beautiful dress under $1500 is absolutely possible! That said, it’s helpful to go into shopping with flexibility in mind, especially for budgets under $1000. At that price point, the exact gown you may have saved from Pinterest is likely not realistic, and that’s true across the bridal industry, not just at our shop. Pinterest is still an amazing place to gather inspiration if you want! We just recommend to focus more on dress elements you love most, like a flowy skirt, soft lace, clean satin, or a specific neckline, rather than searching for one dress, or one that looks just like it. This opens up so many more options and often leads brides to gowns they end up loving even more. Or, just come in with a completely open mind! It is totally not necessary to have a Pinterest board!

It’s also worth knowing that many Pinterest images are designer gowns reposted by knockoff factories advertising very low prices. Unfortunately, those listings can be misleading or flat out fake.

Generally speaking, wedding dresses that cost under about $1500 fall into three categories: samples, used or online.

Sample Wedding Dresses

A “sample” wedding dress is a designer gown brides try on in-store before ordering their own. These are the same dresses available to special order, but since they’ve been tried on multiple times, they may have minor wear like loose beads, dusty hems, or stretched button loops. (Not all off-the-rack dresses are samples!)

The upside? Major savings. Sample gowns typically range from $500–$1500, and buying a sample can save you thousands.

  • A few things to keep in mind: since samples can’t be ordered in your exact size, plan for extra alterations and try to stay within two sizes of your usual fit. Also, most sample gowns are discontinued styles, meaning they may be a few seasons behind current trends. If you’re loving the newest designer collections on Pinterest, samples may not be the best fit for your vision.

Used Wedding Dresses

While we at Bella Brides do not carry used dresses, they can be a budget-friendly option for brides trying to save as much as possible. Used wedding dresses typically range from $300–$1200.

  • A few things to keep in mind: used gowns have already been altered to another bride’s exact measurements, so the fit can be trickier than a standard bridal size and may require more extensive alterations. Used dresses are also often several seasons behind current trends and may show signs of wear from a previous wedding day. If you’re drawn to the latest designer collections or current Pinterest trends, a used dress may not be the best fit for your vision.

Online Wedding Dresses

While online wedding dresses can be tempting, we highly discourage this route. As AI gets more and more powerful, it’s getting harder to know what you’re actually ordering. We regularly see brides come to Bella Brides after an online dress purchase didn’t work out, leaving them scrambling to find a new gown in time. It’s simply a very risky option.

3 shopping tips for a wedding dress budget under $1500

  • Excuse the silly phrase, but “champagne taste on a beer budget” can make dress shopping harder if expectations are too rigid.

  • Shop within your size or up to 2 sizes larger. Avoid dresses that are too small.

  • Make a separate budget for alterations. There will likely be more than if you were to special order a dress at a higher price point.

$1500-3500 Wedding Dress Budget

This is the most common wedding dress price range across the bridal industry as the average bride spends around $2500. At this budget, you’ll find current, designer wedding dresses available both off-the-rack and through special order.

A quick note: not every off-the-rack dress is a sample! At Bella Brides, we intentionally stock many dresses to sell directly off the rack. We love this option because you leave with your dress the same day, avoid the $200 special order fee, and can get into alterations sooner, saving both stress and money.

While fully custom gowns are usually above this price range, many dresses at this level offer customization options like shorter hem lengths, sparkle or no sparkle variations, and added straps or sleeves.

We know, $1500-3500 is still a very large range, so let’s break it down even further:

  • $1500-2000: These dresses are current and special-orderable while still being budget-conscious. Expect lighter-weight fabrics and less structure, but still beautiful, quality gowns. Great for a comfy wear and easy travel.

  • $2000-3500: We call this the sweet spot. This range offers the most dresses, the most current styles, fashion-forward designs, higher-end fabrics, and the best overall value. If your budget allows, this range typically gives brides the easiest and most flexible shopping experience.

3 Shopping Tips for a $1500-3500 Budget

  • Be open to off-the-rack dresses! Many are brand new collection gowns, not samples.

  • Think creatively. Designer customizations are often more affordable and polished than altering later.

  • Set aside a separate alterations budget, even if ordering in your size.

$3500+ Wedding Dress Budget

This is the luxury and couture category. These gowns are the crème de la crème: truly unique, fashion-forward, and crafted with exceptional materials and construction. At this level, you’ll see elevated fabrics, intricate detailing, stronger structure, hand-placed embellishments, and designer craftsmanship that simply feels different in person. Many gowns also offer extensive customization options to create a more one-of-a-kind look.

  • $3500–5000: These dresses are known for standout details and elevated styling. Think dramatic textures, intricate lacework, statement trains, and all the little touches that make a gown feel extra special. Many designers at this level also include luxury extras like custom garment bags or branded accessories. And don’t forget, we stock many of these gowns to be sold off-the-rack as well!

  • $5000+: This is true couture territory. At this level, the designer name, artistry, and exclusivity become a major part of the experience. These gowns are often made with the finest fabrics, intricate hand-detailing, and highly specialized construction techniques.

Customization also becomes far more extensive. We’ve seen brides combine the top of one gown with the skirt of another, change necklines, add custom sleeves, or completely personalize elements of the design. The possibilities are incredibly exciting, and also more collaborative and creative than standard bridal shopping. With couture, you’re investing in artistry and craftsmanship as much as the dress itself. These gowns are designed to feel distinctive, memorable, and deeply personal.

3 Shopping Tips for a $3500+ Budget

  • Know your timeline, especially for custom gowns, which can take up to 8 months.

  • Remember custom work is still a leap of faith. Once a gown is created specifically for you, it’s yours.

  • Set aside a separate alterations budget, as couture fabrics and detailing often require more specialized tailoring.

The Most Important Thing about Your Wedding Dress Budget

No matter your budget, there is a wedding dress out there that can make you feel beautiful, confident, and completely yourself. The key is walking into the process with realistic expectations, an open mind, and a clear understanding of what matters most to you.

A bigger budget does not make someone a “better” bride, and a smaller budget does not mean you can’t have an incredible dress. Every price point simply comes with different trade-offs, whether that’s customization, fabrics, designer exclusivity, timeline, or flexibility.

Our biggest piece of advice? Focus less on chasing a Pinterest dress and focus more on how you want to feel on your wedding day. The brides who have the best shopping experience are usually the ones who stay open-minded, trust the process, and allow themselves to be surprised.

And remember: your wedding dress is not just a photo on the internet. It’s a real garment that has to fit your body, move with you, photograph beautifully, and make you feel amazing in real life. That feeling matters more than Pinterest perfection.
