“I Have Plenty of Time…”

But Do You?

A Guide to Your Wedding Dress Timeline

“I Have Plenty of Time…”

We hear this phrase from brides with a year until their wedding and brides with only a couple months to go. It's an understandable thought. After all, we live in a world where almost everything arrives in a matter of days.

Wedding dresses are different. It's not about when you start shopping. It's about when you make your decision.

Before You Read…

If your wedding is less than a year away, don't panic. You are not doomed.

At Bella Brides, we've helped brides find their dream dress on every timeline imaginable. This guide simply explains why saying "yes" earlier often means more choices, lower costs, and less stress.

Let's look at what saying yes at each timeline means for your experience, your budget, and your peace of mind.

Saying Yes 12 Months Out: The Sweet Spot

Congratulations! You've given yourself the gift of choices.

(And note the important nuance of saying yes at 12 months out, not just starting your shopping journey at 12 months out.)

Most wedding gowns take about six months to arrive after ordering, followed by two to three months of alterations. At a year out, almost every designer, fabric, silhouette, and customization is available to you. You're shopping because you're excited and ready, not because you're racing the clock.

Your Experience

  • Browse every silhouette without feeling pressured.

  • Choose between special order and off-the-rack gowns.

  • Celebrate saying "yes" to the dress you truly love.

  • Enjoy a flexible alterations schedule.

Your Budget

  • Standard gown pricing.

  • No rush production fees.

  • Standard alterations pricing.

Stress Level: 😊 Minimal

You're shopping because you're excited and ready, not because you're racing the clock.

One Important Note: Earlier Isn’t Always Better

We don't recommend shopping years in advance. If you start trying on dresses six months before you're actually ready to buy, you could fall in love with a gown that's discontinued before you're ready to order it. On the other hand, buying your dress two years before your wedding means you'll watch several new bridal collections launch before your big day. It's completely normal to wonder if you would have chosen something different.

About 10 to 12 months before your wedding is the sweet spot. It's early enough to give you nearly every option, but not so early that you create unnecessary second-guessing.

Saying Yes 9 Months Out: Still Excellent

You're still in a fantastic position, but this is where timing starts to matter.

Most wedding gowns take about six months to arrive after ordering, followed by two to three months of alterations.

Your Experience

  • Nearly every gown in the collection is still available.

  • Both special order and off-the-rack options are on the table.

  • Plenty of time to schedule alterations as soon as your dress arrives.

Your Budget

  • Standard pricing almost across the board.

  • Rush fees are rarely necessary.

  • You'll likely avoid premium alteration pricing.

Stress Level: 😊 Low

You're still enjoying the process instead of managing a deadline.

Saying Yes 6 Months Out: The Clock Starts Ticking

This is where many brides say, "I still have half a year!"

Unfortunately, your dress doesn't.

Your Experience

  • Some gowns are no longer available to order, or they're only available off the rack in the size currently in the boutique.

  • Your stylist begins considering delivery timelines alongside your preferences.

  • Customizations become much more limited.

Remember, after your dress arrives, you still need time for alterations.

Your Budget

  • Rush production fees enter the conversation.

  • Alterations need to be booked immediately to secure availability.

  • Rush alteration fees may apply, depending on the work needed.

Stress Level: 😅 Moderate

You're still very likely to find your dream dress, but the timeline is beginning to influence your options.

Saying Yes 4 Months Out: Flexibility Is Disappearing

Finding your dream dress is still absolutely possible, but availability now plays a major role.

Your Experience

  • Instead of asking, "Which dress do I love the most?" you're often asking, "Which dress can actually arrive in time?" or “Which dress is the right size in store?’

  • Sample gowns and off-the-rack dresses become much more important.

  • Quick decision-making becomes essential.

Your Budget

  • Rush production often turns into super rush production, if the designer even offers it.

  • The faster the rush, the higher the fee.

  • Alterations costs increase because of short timelines.

Stress Level: 😬 Rising

You're still excited, but the calendar becomes part of every conversation.

Saying Yes 2 Months Out or Less: Problem-Solving Mode

Can we still find an amazing dress? Absolutely.

But now we're solving logistics just as much as we're styling.

Your Experience

  • Your stylist focuses on what is realistic and available in or near your size.

  • Off-the-rack becomes your best friend because rush production is rarely an option this close to the wedding.

  • Every day you wait makes the process more challenging.

Your Budget

  • Rush alterations pricing is common.

  • Alterations often cost more because off-the-rack gowns may require more extensive tailoring.

  • Last-minute solutions usually come with higher costs.

Stress Level: 😰 High

Instead of simply enjoying saying "yes," you're focused on making sure everything comes together on time.

Why Deciding Earlier Can Actually Save You Money

Waiting often feels like the safer financial choice. Ironically, it's usually the opposite.

Delaying your decision can lead to:

  • Rush production fees.

  • Premium alteration pricing.

  • Fewer dress choices.

  • Choosing a dress because of timing instead of because you truly love it.

Making your decision earlier gives you more freedom, more options, and often lowers your overall costs.

So... When Should You Make Your Decision?

12 months before your wedding: Ideal.

9 months: Excellent.

6 months: Still a great time, but don't wait much longer.

4 months: Totally doable! But expect rush fees and a greater focus on off-the-rack options.

2 months or less: Doable with flexibility in mind! Off-the-rack becomes your best option, and every day counts.
